Vacuum Insulated Piping Configurator

Vacuum Insulated Piping Design & Sizing Configurator

Design your vacuum insulated transfer piping online with this free engineering tool. Select your service fluid and flow rate, then describe your route. The configurator generates a preliminary line size, an indicative heat-leak estimate and a concept layout for your vacuum jacketed piping (VIP) run.

The configurator provides preliminary engineering guidance for cryogenic transfer lines carrying LNG, liquid nitrogen (LIN), liquid oxygen (LOX) and liquid hydrogen (LH2). Therefore, it is suitable for feasibility studies, early-stage engineering, budget estimating and tender preparation.

Vacuum Insulated Piping Preliminary Sizing

Preliminary sizing of a vacuum insulated transfer line starts with the service fluid and the required flow rate. The physical properties of the fluid, its density and saturation conditions define an acceptable velocity range. Next, the flow rate sets the inner pipe diameter. The route length, number of bends and elevation changes then drive pressure drop and heat-leak estimates.

Vacuum jacketed piping keeps heat leak low by placing the product pipe inside a vacuum annulus with multilayer insulation. As a result, it minimizes boil-off, avoids ice accumulation and protects product quality along the whole transfer line. You can read more about the underlying physics in our article on heat transfer at cryogenic temperatures.

The CryoVanguard VJ Piping Configurator uses these parameters to generate an initial engineering configuration. As a result, engineers can rapidly evaluate line sizes and compare route options during feasibility and early design stages.

How the Vacuum Insulated Piping Configurator Works

The configurator runs in four guided steps. First, you define the operating conditions: the service fluid, the flow rate and the ambient temperature. Second, you describe the layout: route length, bends and elevation changes. Third, the tool calculates the technical results: pipe size, indicative heat leak and boil-off. Fourth, you can request a follow-up from a cryogenic engineer directly from the tool.

You can work in metric or imperial units and switch between them at any time. In addition, the configurator handles the fluid properties automatically, including density and operating temperature for each cryogen.

Vacuum Jacketed Piping for LNG, LIN, LOX and Liquid Hydrogen

Vacuum insulated piping is the reference solution for cryogenic transfer between storage tanks, trailers, vaporizers and process equipment. Typical applications include ASU product lines, LNG loading arms and satellite stations, hydrogen refuelling and distribution loops supplying production plants.

For liquid hydrogen, vacuum jacketed lines are practically mandatory because of the very low latent heat of the fluid. In addition, austenitic stainless steel is the standard material for the inner pipe, as explained in our articles on materials selection for cryogenic service and liquid hydrogen handling.

A vacuum jacketed line also handles thermal contraction. A long cryogenic run shrinks by hundreds of millimetres when cooled down, which the design must absorb through expansion loops, flexible segments or bellows. Learn more in cryogenic piping design: managing contraction and stress.

Vacuum Insulated Piping: Frequently Asked Questions

What is vacuum insulated piping?

Vacuum insulated piping (VIP), also called vacuum jacketed piping (VJP), carries a cryogenic liquid inside an inner pipe surrounded by a vacuum annulus with multilayer insulation and an outer jacket. The vacuum suppresses conduction and convection, so heat leak and boil-off stay very low along the line.

When should I use vacuum jacketed pipe instead of conventional insulation?

VIP is preferred for short and medium transfer runs where boil-off, ice build-up, safety and footprint matter: loading bays, tank-to-process connections, hydrogen and helium service and clean product lines. Conventional foam-insulated pipe can remain attractive for very long runs where higher heat leak is acceptable.

How is a vacuum insulated line sized?

The flow rate and the acceptable velocity or pressure drop set the inner pipe diameter. The route then determines the number of rigid sections, bayonet or welded joints, bends and supports, which drive both cost and heat leak. The configurator automates this first screening step.

Does the configurator replace detailed engineering?

No. The results are preliminary and indicative. Final design requires project-specific stress and contraction analysis, support design, pressure and code verification, and vendor qualification.
