Cryogenic Storage Tank Design & Sizing Calculator

Design your cryogenic storage tank online with this free engineering tool. Select LNG, liquid nitrogen (LIN) or liquid oxygen (LOX). Then define the required storage capacity and key design parameters. The calculator generates preliminary tank dimensions and a conceptual drawing for a flat-bottom cryogenic storage tank.

The calculator provides preliminary engineering guidance based on API 620 / API 625 design principles. Therefore, it is suitable for feasibility studies, early-stage engineering and comparison of cryogenic storage configurations.

Cryogenic Storage Tank Preliminary Sizing

Preliminary sizing of a flat-bottom cryogenic storage tank starts with the required net storage capacity. The physical properties of the stored product also influence the design. Next, the required capacity defines the relationship between the internal diameter, shell height and maximum operating liquid level.

For LNG, liquid nitrogen (LIN) and liquid oxygen (LOX), engineers must consider several additional parameters. These include operating pressure, boil-off rate, insulation thickness, freeboard and seismic conditions. In addition, the design must account for the dimensional difference between the inner and outer tanks.

The CryoVanguard Tank Designer uses these parameters to generate an initial engineering configuration. As a result, engineers can rapidly evaluate tank dimensions and compare different storage capacities during feasibility and early design stages.

How the Cryogenic Tank Design Calculator Works

The CryoVanguard Tank Designer converts the main process and design requirements into a preliminary tank geometry. Moreover, users can adjust the calculation interactively to compare different storage configurations.

Input parameters include: cryogenic product (LNG, LIN or LOX), net storage capacity, height-to-diameter ratio (H/D), design pressure, maximum boil-off rate target and peak ground acceleration (PGA).

Calculated outputs include: inner tank diameter, inner shell height, design liquid level, outer tank diameter, overall height, side and roof insulation thickness and bottom insulation thickness.

Finally, the generated drawing provides a visual representation of the preliminary tank configuration. This allows engineers to compare alternative capacities and geometries before proceeding to detailed mechanical, structural and seismic design.

API 620 and API 625 Cryogenic Tank Design Considerations

Flat-bottom cryogenic storage tanks require specific design codes and project requirements. For example, API 620 provides requirements for large, welded, low-pressure storage tanks. API 625 addresses tank systems for refrigerated liquefied gas storage.

However, a complete cryogenic tank design requires much more than preliminary dimensional sizing. Engineers must consider material selection, allowable stresses, internal and external loads, wind and seismic actions. In addition, they must evaluate anchorage, foundation interaction, thermal contraction, insulation performance and piping loads. Pressure, vacuum conditions and applicable local regulations also form part of the detailed design.

Therefore, the results generated by this calculator are intended for preliminary engineering, feasibility studies and conceptual comparison only. They do not constitute a certified mechanical or structural design. Qualified engineers must verify the final design against the applicable codes, standards and project-specific requirements.
